AI-Assisted Writing, and a Total Reboot of this Blog

I created this image in DALL-E. The prompt: I need a title picture for my blog with the topic “AI-assisted writing”.

Introduction:

Hello everyone! Welcome to the new version of my blog—a place that represents my journey as a writer. Around three years ago, I began this digital adventure while I was writing my second novel. In the past, the blog was like my random thoughts journal, with posts as unpredictable as my story plot twists. The randomness was charming, but eventually I wanted some coherence – a narrative to connect everything.

After writing four novels, I’m about to embark on something new – a fresh book and this blog. The old content doesn’t fit with who I am now. So, with a clear vision and a defined theme, I am rebooting this space. Like my writing, my relationship with AI tools has also changed. They’re now a crucial part of my writing process. I’m excited to delve into and share this awesome connection between AI and writing with all of you.

The Misconceptions of AI in Writing:

In the digital writing world, AI is often seen as either just a tool or a futuristic entity that will take over the author’s job. Both extremes miss the nuanced reality of AI’s capabilities and role in the writing process. Some people see AI as just fancy autocomplete, not realizing how it can actually help and improve creativity. On the flip side, some people think AI will someday start writing books with no help, making authors useless. AI in writing is like a film crew. It needs a ‘casting director’ to make characters, a ‘director’ to guide the plot, and an ‘editor’ to polish the writing.

AI isn’t limited by a lack of creativity, it just needs humans to guide it. AI tools have some limits, like how much they can write and the amount of context they can understand. But we can work around them. They can gather information from training data, but nothing beats the creativity of a human touch. As an author, I’ve had to deal with AI going off the rails and forgetting things. It’s all about give and take, with the AI suggesting and the author deciding how to keep the story going.

Authors should see AI as a powerful tool in their toolbox, like how artists use Photoshop—not to make art for them, but to bring their ideas to life more easily and accurately. AI can handle the boring stuff like editing, so authors can focus on telling a great story. With other tools, we can make covers, create illustrations, and even make audiobooks. As these technologies get better, the possibilities keep growing. But for now, the most important thing is to master the craft. We need to know how to spot when AI messes up and how to make the most of its strengths. By combining our know-how with AI’s abilities, we become like conductors, crafting stories that really connect with readers.

AI-Assisted Writing – The New Theme:

Curiosity drives us writers, and it’s this intense curiosity that has led me to explore AI-assisted writing, the focus of our blog. This journey is about more than just following a trend. I don’t just want to share insights, but also challenge the norm and give my honest opinion on this amazing technology.

While writing my current novel, I’ve got this AI tool as my co-author. It helps keep my “series bible” in check, makes sure my story stays consistent, and helps me brainstorm ideas. Now the AI writes the first drafts of scenes, so I’m more like a director conducting a creative symphony. This whole thing made me rethink how I do things. Instead of doing it all on my own, I’m teaming up with AI to improve my storytelling and avoid any mistakes.

The blog’s mission is more than just showing how AI-assisted writing works. I’ll break down how AI helps with storytelling, character development, and more. But the primary goal is to make it less scary and more understandable. AI and writing is not the same as AI in graphic design.

I hope that by revealing what’s really going on, I can put readers and fellow authors at ease. You’ll find value in the stories carefully crafted by humans, with technology playing a supporting role. Authors will learn how to use AI for stuff that used to be a pain, and they’ll realize AI actually makes us more creative, not less. I’m gonna use this blog to show how AI and human creativity can team up to make stories that are both gripping and really human.

The Author’s Role in the Age of AI:

As AI takes over, storytelling still stays human. No matter how advanced technology gets, AI can’t quite capture the magic of a novel that needs the author’s constant involvement, especially for longer ones. AI might tackle narrative structure and character development one day, but it can never replace an author’s personal touch and individual style. We love human stories because they connect with our social side, teaching us important lessons that shape who we are.

My latest project is a good example. AI wasn’t involved, so I spent months carefully crafting the main plot, a complex creation straight from my imagination. But when I added AI to the mix for creating more character arcs, it totally boosted my ideas and made the storytelling process way faster. AI was more like a helpful partner, pushing me to improve my ideas.

As AI evolves, I can see it becoming like a helpful sidekick, able to understand the script, follow the plot, and even mimic my writing style to make editing easier. AI is about to become more than just a tool—it’ll help us write, shape drafts, and refine themes.

Right now, AI is great at analyzing stuff, like giving suggestions or finding hidden themes, but it’s not so great at telling a unique story or creating complex characters. The author still owns these elements, where our creativity and emotions are irreplaceable. As AI gets better at analyzing writing techniques, like narrative distance, it still needs the author’s guidance.

Modern authors are becoming more like visionary producer-directors. It’s not just about writing anymore, it’s about planning, designing, and managing – a holistic approach where we’re involved strategically. We need to figure out when to rely on our human touch and when to let AI handle the grunt work. AI can add harmony to the storytelling mix, but humans will always shape the soul of the story.

Practical Uses of AI for Authors:

The digital revolution has brought in a whole new era for authors, where AI tools aren’t just helpers, but actual partners in the creative process. I’ve seen firsthand how AI can be used in writing for plot and character analysis. Like, in my current project, AI has been extremely helpful in fine-tuning character profiles and in making sure everything flows smoothly in this huge book series. AI has been like a brainstorming buddy, always there to help with specific prompts and free-form chats.

AI has completely revolutionized how we break scenes down and analyze their structure. It offers a fresh perspective, free from human biases or limitations. This is a godsend for the introverted writer who finds dealing with other people exhausting, or for those who struggle to find someone who shares their passion and patience for a developing story.

AI is awesome at reviewing outlines and lore, even for non-human characters. It brings a level of consistency and depth that would normally need an entire team of writers. It’s great at finding unused characters, catching logical mistakes, and making events more impactful—way faster and more accurate than humans can.

Using AI to help draft the first version of a manuscript is a total paradigm shift. You can focus on telling stories and let AI handle the hard work of writing. This method not only works better but also saves brain power for the trickier parts of writing. With AI, editing becomes less of a chore because it can adapt to your style.

AI is really helpful in areas like marketing, where authors might have a hard time. It can easily create blurbs, elevator pitches, and promo material – places where selling clashes with an author’s instincts. AI can even help with boring tasks like emails, freeing up time for authors to focus on the creative stuff they love.

Dispelling Fears:

There’s reason for authors to be concerned about AI’s role in writing. The idea of AI writing entire books from a single sentence is not some far-fetched sci-fi thing. It’s actually likely to happen in the future. However, AI writing is nowhere near that advanced yet. It can only produce short stories that often use clichés and lack nuanced characters and storytelling. The writing can get too dramatic without a human editor, and readers want more subtlety and depth, and this will never change.

In my experience, AI is all about working together. AI is essential for speeding up my book, but it can’t beat the human touch for quality. AI is good at the mechanics of writing, but it’s not so great with the creative side, just like people used to freak out about the printing press, typewriters, and word processors. People feared these technologies at first, but they turned out to be really helpful for spreading and improving written works.

AI is gonna be an author’s watchful guardian, making sure the story makes sense, speeding up first drafts, and eventually making editing easier. It’s not like the author, but it’s a tool to enhance our creativity and refine our art.

AI is just another tool to enhance your writing skills. Throughout history, technology has let creation thrive in ways we couldn’t even imagine. AI offers new freedoms, both economically and creatively. It makes publishing more accessible to everyone, not just those with money or specialized skills.

I don’t see AI taking over the author’s job. I see it making it better. The road to perfecting AI’s writing skills follows the Pareto principle: It will take AI a long time to get the last 20% right, and even then, it can only create “AI-written books”, not novels crafted by humans. Authors won’t get kicked out. They’ll grow with AI and learn to use its power to boost their own skills and reach.
